Visvamitrasana, aka Compass Arm Balance, has long

Visvamitrasana, aka Compass Arm Balance, has long been one of my favorite asanas. I started practicing and playing with it in the very early days of my yoga journey, and have loved it ever since.

I love that it requires so many opposing actions: strength AND flexibility, effort AND ease, grounding AND flight.

I love how much of a full body and mind asana this is: you have to BREATHE through the hamstring opening, while balancing on one hand and foot, while opening your chest and shoulders, trusting the ground beneath you, while you take an optimistic gaze to the sky.

This shape can give you everything, as can any shape that is for you in the now. Visvamitrasana is yoga in one asana for me.

AND: it doesn’t have be for anyone else! And, AND: it is decidedly NOT for everyone!

The interesting thing to me, is that so many people focus on all the effort in this pose. But, are you *really* practicing yoga if you can’t find the ease?

It may take time, it could take a life time to fully express this asana, but that is IT: the journey there IS the yoga. And, if you aren’t balancing ease with your effort, is your practice benefitting you?

Never force. Be curious, allow, open, surrender. Never force.

When your body and mind are ready, the pose will come.

REAL women empower other women. So, when @sweatforsmiles asked if I would teach @crossflow_yoga for her POWER FOR PINK event in NYC, my answer was an immediate and resounding, YES PLEASE!

THANK YOU to everyone who was a part of making this magical event happen last week: the hosts, Ashley Slaughter (Sweat For Smiles) and @morgannewman125 with The Newman Group, our incredible moderator, @thatpennylife_ , my fellow panelists, Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Survivor and Author Kia Lee (@namastenyc8 ) and Morgan Newman, the attendees, those who couldn’t make it but donated, the partners - I am so, SO grateful.

We raised funds for @bcrfcure , helped increase breast cancer education and awareness, gave back to each other with our conversation on empowerment and community, and ourselves with our EMPOWERING flow, (that is now live on @crossflow_yoga !) and healthy sips and bites.

The takeaway? We talked about three very different topics - taking control over your finances, fitness, and wellness. But there was one standout recurring theme - when you’re faced with a challenge, advocate for yourself. Listen carefully but also trust your gut & speak up. We did this when we all made time for ourselves to attend Power for Pink. This is something that we can all do more of across the board in every aspect of life 💥.

If it’s not making you happy, WHY are you choosing to do it?

The less time I have outside of obligations, the more I try to be intentional about how I use the little free / “choice” time that I do have.

Seek out JOY. Every day. On the mat, off the mat, every chance you get.

One of my many favorite things about yoga is that we each get to CHOOSE and be INTENTIONAL about our practices. Don’t want to go upside down? Don’t! Inversions make you feel strong, competent, and happy? Take them any time inspiration strikes!

It’s YOUR yoga, do what YOU want! Xo

There are 23 year olds walking around who didn’t

There are 23 year olds walking around who didn’t live through 9/11 #neverforget 🇺🇸.

Our apartment in NYC had a direct view of the twin towers before we moved in, and when we did: one world trade (that’s the sliver of glass building you see from your roof in this shot) and the Oculus.

I don’t think there is a human alive who lived through the September 11th attacks and doesn’t remember exactly where they were, and exactly what they were doing when the twin towers were hit. Sending so much love to all who were affected by these merciless terrorist attacks, and this senseless loss 💔.

Be kind. Every day, but especially today. Send love to all who are grieving today (and every day). Do something that adds goodness to our world today. We all need more of that in our lives - today and every day.

As the saying goes, “Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” - MLK Jr. ❤️

Thank so much for all of the birthday wishes this week! The Leo in me lives for the sun ☀️, so I’m spending most of my time off here, and IRL with my babies (covered in organic sunscreen of COURSE!) 🩷💜💙.
