Hello, Universe? It’s Me, Heidi: We have some talking to do.

Hi Friends,

If you know me, or have been following my posts on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter for a bit, you know that a lot of my story, and a lot of what formed me, came from beating odds, healing “unhealable” injuries, and trusting in divine faith and SANKALPAH.  No more than four years ago, I was told I would never do a backbend again (and, well, you’ve seen the pictures of my toes on my head.)

Along my journey, I found tremendous strength and empowerment in my physical yoga practice – especially in arm balances and inversions (see a short piece I wrote for MBG here).  So, when two Fridays ago, my foot caught in a large hole in a NYC sidewalk, and I fell and broke multiple bones in my wrist, and was told things were looking awfully bad, and when I asked when I could handstand again, the surgeon looked at me like I had five heads, and said “down dog is difficult”, I was positively devastated – forget the physical – it was emotionally and mentally crippling. It took a multitude of amazing family, great friends, mentors, and even a family member who is an orthopedic surgeon to remind me: “Heidi, they don’t know you.”  And all of my loved ones are right, but I am intensely grateful for the reminder.

We are all limitless potential. We get to choose this life. Yes, things happen, and we wouldn’t be human if we weren’t phased.  But, deep down, you need to know that you are in control of your own destiny. Grab the reins, take the driver’s seat.  Did I know this was a huge wakeup call from the Universe? Yes. BUT, that doesn’t mean giving up.  I was in a ton of pain after the accident, and then even more pain after surgery, but I know: every single day, I am getting stronger. Every second of every day as I heal, I am stronger than the last. And, I will recover from this stronger than when I started (and, thanks to the universe, and much to my chagrin, perhaps a bit slower.)

In no coincedence, the Hay House “I Can Do It Conference” hits NYC this weekend.  I am thrilled to be able to go and see a number of incredibly inspiring speakers, and be surrounded by all of that positive energy.  One of the beautiful humans that I get to see is the one and only Kris Carr.  And, as I followed her self-healing through nutrition and other self-love practices over the years, I am excited to hear again her healing message at this time in my life.  From her website: “My wake-up call encouraged me to make a total lifestyle upgrade inside and out. It taught me how to listen to my brilliant inner guide, brought me back to nature (my church), the garden and kitchen (my pharmacies), and connected me more deeply with the people and animals who set my heart ablaze. I learned that a nutrient dense, plant-passionate diet rules, the Standard American Diet destroys (everything), stress sucks (all life-force), exercise is non-negotiable (great for your head, heart, cells and ass-ets), joy is utterly contagious, and having fun must be taken very seriously.”  I plan to use this wakeup call from the Universe as my oportunity to make yet another lifestyle upgrade.  Because, as much as we think we know our optimal formula for health, there is always room for refining based on feedback, and that is exactly what I am viewing this as.  VERY. LOUD. FEEDBACK.

If you are in NYC this weekend, be sure to check out Kris, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Dr. Christian Northrup, and my beautiful friend, Jessica’s brother, Nick Ortner (and many others)! #icandoit2014

Much love and healing,

Heidi– I broke my fingers last year and it actually was a yoga injury for me… It woke me up to radical acceptance of what is. Months of not practicing asana turned out to be a most nourishing, humbling, and cleansing experience. I had to step back from my physical practice and cultivate peace from within. It was my body telling me to relax, slow down, and nurture myself with love, patience, and self-compassion. It was a difficult message for me to receive, but it allowed me to come home to so much wisdom within. It allowed me to open my heart and my mind to the infinite potential of myself and of every moment. It taught me to trust in the process of healing and to rediscover the brilliance of being alive — in nature, with loved ones, and with my own presence. I am so sorry you have to experience this. I trust that it will strengthen, enliven, and inspire you in ways you least expect. Your healing will empower others to allow themselves to be still and relax. Your healing will be graceful and courageous, just as you are always. I admire you and I am sending you loving light and wishes for ease and serenity.
